“I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list”
-Susan Sontag
Each week, I’ll highlight a location, hotel, or activity that’s on my bucket list. Can’t wait to cross them off!
Do you believe in heaven?
I believe that if heaven exists, this is exactly what it looks like.

In fact, it’s known as the place where heaven meets earth.
Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni is the world’s largest salt flat, spanning 4,086 square miles. The salt flat was formed as a result of transformations between several lakes, and Wikipedia has the scientific explanation if you’re into that sort of thing.
And even if you’re not, just go for the beauty of the clear skies reflecting on the flat salt ground, creating the world’s largest mirror to dance on, while admiring the soft blues, and thanking mother nature for the most perfect photo opt.
As if that’s not enough, there are flamingos!

The Journey
I’ve been told it’s not easy, but well worth the trek. Fly into La Paz, which is the world’s highest capital city so prepare for the altitude headaches. From there, fly or bus to Uyuni. Personally, I would pay the extra cost for the quick flight verses a 12-hour bus ride a few rows deep with your new Bolivian roommates. But to each their own.
Lesley Murphy from The Road Les Traveled did some research and found that Red Planet seems to be the go-to tour choice. Most choose the three day/two night itinerary in order to best take in the entire Bolivian countryside.
Laguna Colorado – A striking red lagoon where flamingos thrive. Anything pink is a friend of mine.
Laguna Verde – A green lake with a gorgeous backdrop of the inactive Volcano Licancabur. Known for hot springs and even more opportunities to hang with those attractive pink creatures, otherwise known as flamingos.
Always a fan of Virtuoso, they also offer a 3-day tour.
While you won’t find a Ritz or a Four Seasons, there are unique sleeping options from private airstreams to hotels made completely out of salt.
While many guides will recommend going during dry season, insiders say rainy season (January – April) is best, when the sky and ground truly become one to form a perfect reflection.
To infinity and beyond…
